Obituary

Lillian Mildred Talley McCain was born to the late Solomon and Minnie Emanuel Talley on December 28,1921 in Cheraw, South Carolina. Lillian went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct 2, 2021. She left this world in the same home she was born in. Her childhood and young adult life were spent in Cheraw where she attended GW Long Memorial Presbyterian Church and graduated Coulter Academy in 1940.  She was athletically inclined, playing forward position on the Coulter High School basketball team along side her sisters Margaret and Myrt.

“Lyl” as she was affectionately called, graduated from Coulter Jr. College in 1942 and Johnson C Smith University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1944. While at Smith she pledged Delta Sigma Theta. Lyl attended NY University pursuing credits for Early Childhood Education in 1950. Lyl was a retired educator of New York Public School system. Her love of teaching didn’t stop with her retirement as she consistently gave lessons about life and gardening to family and friends. She loved to watch her beloved Mets baseball game and play cards with lifelong friends Georgiana Knight and the late Mrs. Margaret Cole.

A devoted wife and mother, Lillian married her late husband Robert McCain in 1946. They moved to Long Island, New York where they resided while raising their two children Holly McCain Minnis and the late Robbie McCain. Their union span thirty-nine years until Robert’s passing in 1985.

Lyl later returned to Cheraw, South Carolina to take care of her father Solomon Talley until his passing in September 1996. Lyl stayed active with her beloved Coulter Memorial Academy Alumni Association where she held several office positions. She also remained a member of GW Long Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Lillian was a devoted grandmother and aunt. Several of her nieces and nephews grew up in the home with her in both New York and Cheraw. She stayed busy with her great grandson A’mere whom she adored and who resides in the home with her at the time of her passing.

Lyl was truly one of a kind and will be missed greatly. She leaves to mourn her death: devoted daughter, Holly McCain-Minnis (Myron Minnis) of Cheraw SC; granddaughter, Ashley Minnis; great granddaughter, Amaiya and great grandson, Adonis of NY; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, Lillian was proceeded in death by her husband, Robert McCain; son, Robbie McCain and granddaughter, Aja Minnis.

Lillian lived a life well lived and loved! May we all seek her strength and tenacity during this time of bereavement.
